Chapter Nine
A fall nip was in the air that Sunday morning promising that summer would not last forever. Soft rain had fallen most of the night and clouds still hung low in the sky. The weather fit right in with Greta’s dark mood. She’d worked from daylight to dark the previous day in the yard. Trey taught her how to start the push mower and the weed eater. When she’d finished those jobs, she pruned the roses and cleaned the flower beds. She didn’t enjoy the work but it kept her hands busy even if it didn’t stop visions of LaNita on that runway platform in New York. By bedtime Etta was singing her praises, but all the compliments couldn’t lift the heavy mood from the night before.
It had to do with Kyle and that so-called fake wife of his. Greta had researched the information on her laptop computer after Kyle brought her home the night before. Was he was telling her the truth and there wasn’t a legal marriage with LaNita?
“Why do you even care?” she said aloud as she got dressed.
She sat with Rosy and Trey in church. Rosy wore a lovely light green sheath dress with gold buttons up the front and shoes only a shade darker. Trey looked his usual handsome self in a black Italian suit, tailored a couple of years ago since the lapels were a bit wider this year. Not that anyone in Sulphur would notice the difference, but Greta did. Trey held Rosy’s hand and whispered in her ear a few times. Greta’s heart longed for a man to treat her like that. Rich. Poor. Who cared if his lapels were slightly out-of-date? What Wilma said suddenly made sense. Trey wasn’t going to get tired of Rosy this time. He was in Sulphur because he wanted to be, because he was happy.
The preacher read from 1 Corinthians 13 about love. He said that love was long suffering and went on to give examples. Greta didn’t hear him but thought about Kyle. Did he secretly hope someday that LaNita would come home to roost for good and then they could go to the courthouse and really get married? She shook her head and caught the end of a sentence about love never failing.
Yeah, right! It failed Trey and Rosy on the first try and evidently it failed Stella and Rance as well as Dee.
Oh, no it did not, her conscience said. Love didn’t fail. It was lack of love and commitment on one or both sides that failed.
A silent argument waged while the preacher went on with his sermon. In this corner in her only good Sunday dress, the red one she’d worn to Trey and Rosy’s reception, was Greta, arguing that love wasn’t all perfect like the preacher advocated. In the other corner was her conscience, decked out in robes of righteousness, and arguing with a vengeance that true love was pure, lasting, and perfect.
The debate went on until the preacher announced
